Reflection & Ponder

January 6, 2018

Six days into the New Year. It doesn't yet feel like a New year. I suppose it is because I have yet to be on the FARM for a whole year. The grey days of winter. The 10 mile hour prairie winds across the corn and soy fields. The dusty gravel road.

Mr Gummy the Rooster got some frostbite on his comb on those negative degree days. Makes me feel sad. Wanting to better protect him and the others. For one: our dog has taken to chasing them and ripping feathers off. So, increasing the training and making sure they are not out at the same time.

Eagerly anticipating what we can do when our tiller arrives some time this month. Excited to see what flowers pop up this spring. The whole test the new land and see what happens.

We did some cleaning up and sprucing too. Trees came down. Trees planted. Trees ordered for Spring planting. Long walks to get to know the land. Lots of observations. Fox trails, coyote evidence, wild bird wing prints in the snow  and birds hanging out here and there.

I am slowly gathering all the various seeds in one place and making a plan (in between taking care of the house and two little toddlers).

My word for the year: Clarity!

I so need that on so many levels. The exciting thing is not being in limbo between two places. Kids are now going to school (or will) in Linwood. So, that has reduced driving time and has given me the ability to be home to get things done.

My flower GOALS: get more really plant what I have and decorate my yard! (read that as: grow for my business of flower farming :) )

My flower Why: sustainability, seed preservation, local flowers, and working with the land.

I am looking forward to going to the flower track that the Great Plains Growers Conference has on the 13th of January 2018. Looking forward to SeedSavers-KC seed and plant exchange on the 20th.

Grateful for meeting up with other flower folks at our first #GrowerFlowersMeetup  12/27/17 which was inspired by Sarah Funk and her facebook page #growflowers.

Thankful for living in the country. Thankful for the challenge of figuring out just what that
